Jay S. Kaufman is a social epidemiologist who studies the ways in which health
status varies by race, class and other socioeconomic quantities. He has focused
primarily on cardiovascular disease, both in the US and in developing nations,
and has also pursued methodologic development for the analysis of social factors
in epidemiologic studies. Current projects include research on: social and community
factors in the etiology of preterm birth; social position over the lifecourse
in relation to incident coronary disease; methods for covariate control and
identification of direct effects for social factors; community nutritional resources
and reproductive health; and racial/ethnic disparities associated with provision
of medical care. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Epidemiology,
and on the governing council of the American Public Health Association.
